Be the 100th Monkey

According to the parable of the 100th Monkey, wild Japanese
monkeys on the island of Koshima had always eaten sweet potatoes
covered with sand. Eventually one young monkey washed hers off in a
stream. She showed her playmates how to do this, and gradually the
young monkeys and some of their parents began washing their sweet
potatoes. Most, however, though they saw what the others were
doing, continued eating dirty potatoes.
Then one day the 100th monkey learned the new trick and
provided enough added momentum that the rest of the monkeys began
washing their potatoes before eating them. Soon colonies of monkeys
on other islands began washing their sweet potatoes.
The organizers of the 100th Monkey Event urge you to be that
monkey. Lend your awareness and your presence to build the critical
mass necessary to halt nuclear testing.
The Event: April 10-12. Three days of music and mass action
on the worlds largest solar stage, in a beautiful canyon eleven
miles north of Las Vegas.
Performers include: X, Michelle Shocked, Jesse Colin Young,
Richie Havens, Merle Saunders, Clan Dyken, Collective Vision, Joanne
Rand, Ogie Yocha, Alice Dimichele. Additional big-name performers
are signing on every day; check the update phone number.
Speakers include: Daniel Ellsberg, Mike Haney (founder of
AIM), Cesar Chavez, Raymond Yowell, Bill Rosse, Sr., Corbin Harney
(Shoshone Leaders), David Brower (Earth First), Denis Hayes
(founder of Earth Day).
The Walk: April 13-18. A five-day walk through the desert of
the Nevada Test Site. The walk will be grounded in non-violence and
Native American teachings.
The Action: Earth Day, April 19. A mass non-violent
demonstration at the test site to bring global attention to the
injustices of nuclear testing.
This is the "Earth Day International Event of the Year," and
will have international satellite coverage. Organizers anticipate
in excess of 5000 people, which would make it one of the largest
demonstrations ever at the test site.
Bring camping equipment, including drinking water and water
containers. Bring lots of basic foodstuffs (rice, beans, flour,
coffee, etc.) in bulk quantities for the kitchens. Individual
cooking is discouraged because of stress to the fragile ecosystem.
Marchers will need to carry their own food.
The gathering is endorsed by the Western Shoshone, Native
Americans for a Clean Environment, American Indian Movement,
International Indian Treaty Council, and other national and
international political and environmental organizations.

For more information about ways you can participate contact:
National Campus Outreach Office: Boulder, (303) 442-5820; National
Headquarters: Palo Alto, (415) 328-7840. All offices need
volunteers. There are more participants than there is money, so
donate if you can. Money desperately needed for porta-potties! Send
contributions to: The 100th Monkey, 504A Emerson, Palo Alto,
California 94301. There is also an update number with a recording
providing the most recent information about the event: (510)
