Sorry this is so delayed. I just came back from a very interesting meeting
in Otawwa (where it is still colder than hell) which was convened by
Statistics Canada and the US Census Bureau. The Conference (for invitees only)
was on The Measurement of Race and Ethnicity. Nativenet groupies might be
interested to know that it wasn't until one-and-one-half days into the
proceedings that they finally admitted that they weren't counting 'aboriginies'
all that well. According to their best estimates undercount of native
Canadians is 45% (to wit I replied that they're as bad as cockroaches--if you
see one, then you know twelve more are hiding somewhere).
Another interesting observation was the lack of native people from Canada at
these proceedings. I don't know all the politics there but it seems that the
Canada's official politically correct stance to the discussion of race is to
exclude their participation (very strange, very non-statistical). On the
other hand, the one catagory which the Canadian Government does purport to
measure is something called 'visible minorities'! You Canadians sure are a
strange lot!!!!
