I am currently putting together a short module to be used in a sixth grade
classroom. I would like to have permission to use some of the material (such
as the responses to Andy Rooney's column) to provide the students with
perspectives to which they might not otherwise have access.
It may be of interest (?amusement?) to you to know that, although the entire
sixth grade social studies curriculum (Standards Of Learning) of Virginia
provides emphasis on learning about cultural interdependence, the only cultures
mentioned in the S.O.L. are Indo-european and Egyptian. Therefore, to study
Native American Culture is an addtion to the established program....
I am planning on making extensive use of KEEPERS OF THE EARTH and KEEPERS OF THE
ANIMALS both by Joseph Bruchac and Michael J. Caduto. I am open to any and all
other suggestions for materials for use in this unit. Please be aware that we
will be using a "Whole Language Approach" - which is identical to Bruchac &
Caduto's approach in the two books just mentioned.
I am in desperate need of writing by qualified Native American Women...any
suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your kind consideration
