[ The handful of responses I received from NativeNet members to my recent
query concerning how people feel about the exchanges about Mohawk history
have all been to the effect that the amount of personal vindictiveness
they express is very regrettable and detracts from the serious content,
which one respondent identified as "valuable information." I will,
therefore, be willing to pass on only those articles on this subject
which, in my own personal estimation, are free from such personal slurs.

The following is a copy of a message I sent to Mr. Cliff Shepstone via the
Fidonet Echo Indian Affairs in response to Mr. Shepstone's reply to Gerald
Alfred.

Hello Cliff,

CS>Hello Fred;
CS>
CS>What is this? More "hate mail" from your hit-and-run aquaintances?

For a couple of weeks now Fred Towner's system acts as a relay for messages I
post from Internet. The reason was a concern by a participant about the
visible and potentially disruptive Internet message headers. Fred Towner has
volunteered to strip those headers off the messages and then pass the postings
on to the Indian Affairs echo.

CS>I also make sure to include references wherever applicable. This garbage
CS>that you have contaminated the echo with is just that - garbage, and is
CS>reminiscent of sort of sniping from behind cover!

Again, Fred Towner serves as a relay and passes on. What really concerns me is
your reference of sniping from behind cover. Your exchange with other
participants of INDIAN AFFAIRS regarding Mohawk history was relayed to an
INTERNET mailing-list called NATIVENET by a participant from Germany. Since
there was a strong reaction from Mr. Gerald Alfred regarding that posting, and
since you would not be able to comment on his reaction as a non-participant of
NATIVENET I felt it be fairer to pipe Mr. Alfred's comments back to the echo
you have access to and give you a chance to comment. The alternative would
have been comments about you and/or your arguments/reasoning hidden from you
and beyond your control.

CS> Whether or not this reply reaches the author(?), I will answer his
CS>points, WITH REFERENCES:

Your complete comments were relayed to the NATIVENET mailing-list this morning
(92-04-09) and so will my reply after I have posted it to NATIVENET.

CS>Fred- After the first couple of paras, I addressed all of my remarks
CS>to Gerald Albert, the alleged author of this travesty. I would not
CS>want you and Leitner to get off scot free though. I am sure that all
CS>of the unprejudiced readers of this echo will recognize the disservice
CS>you have done. By being parties to this scurrilous attack, you have
CS>both demonstrated that you are cowardly asses, totally ignorant of the
CS>topic at hand and without ethics of even the most basic kind. If YOU
CS>want to take issue with what I say, do so yourselves instead of taking
CS>this "bush-whacker" approach of searching the globe for one even MORE
CS>unethical than yourselves! By this attack, you have already lost all
CS>credibility - what more would you have to lose?

While I cannot speak for Fred I assume that some or all of your comments also
apply to me.

The disservice I seem to have done is assuming that you would be interested in
what others have to say about your postings in areas inaccessible to you,
taking the time to let you know about it, and giving you an opportunity to
respond to it by trying to facilitate the exchange of postings between the
systems. I guess I was wrong. Your judgement about being a cowardly ass,
being totally ignorant of the topic at hand and being without ethics of even
the most basic kind I will leave to people who know me and are in a much
better position to judge me than you will ever be, Cliff.

If I wanted to take issue with what you say I would do so without delay, as
our exchange of several months ago should have taught you.

If I would want to attack you, Cliff, I would do so with a vengeance, and
believe me, your paranoid ramblings of the posting I am quoting would give me
good reason.

The question I have to ask you, Cliff, is whether you are interested in what
is going on with your postings in other nets, and the comments they elicit,
and whether you would like to have an opportunity to give your side of the
argument, or if you are not interested what happens with your postings, and
the comments they elicit and whether you would rather not have the possibility
to give your side of the argument.

CS> Have a good day!

You too, Cliff, although without the malice dripping from your wish.

Roland
