I think that no collection on the American Indian Experience would be
complete without reading "Lakota Woman" by Mary (last name of) Crow Dog.
This gutsy account of life under the hands of the BIA and the corrupt
tribal government relates the first- & second-hand accounts of the
second (most recent, not last) uprising at Wounded Knee as a rather
heroic, though largely unsung showing of pride and valiance. It also portrays
the contrast, in moving, personal, and direct speech, between the American
Indian (such as Mary) and the Americanized Indian (such as, in this case,
her mother).
