Following is a press-release note from H.O.N.O.R. regarding an
important event scheduled for next Tuesday (5/5/92). It seemed to
me of probable interest to nativenet readers. I've simply typed
it verbatim.

RE: Minnesota/Wisconsin Peace Roundtable

*For Immediate Release*

Officials and state leaders from Minnesota and Wisconsin will come
together at Hinckley, Minnesota [Tobies Resort & Conference
Center] on Tuesday [May 5] to promote peaceful relations between
the Minnesota Indian tribes and the non-Indian communities.
Sponsored by HONOR, a national human rights coalition, and the
Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Indians -- and underwritten by the Peace
Development Fund, MA; the American Association of Indian Affairs,
NY; and the Wisconsin Education Association Council, the one day
event is designed to prevent Wisconsin's nine-year state of rancor
regarding treaty rights from spreading to Minnesota.

Participants at the conference include representatives from the
two states Attorney Generals office, Legislatures, Treaty Task
Forces, Conference of Churches, Education Associations, Media
educators, Departments of Natural Resources, Lakes Association
Leaders, and Sea Grant/Biologist Commissions. Keynote Speaker
will be Steven Nyquist, author of several articles on conflict
management and self determination.

Conference organizer and Executive Director of HONOR, Sharon Metz,
said, "This conference is not about fish -- it's not about
lawsuits. It's about peacemaking and intercultural understanding.
In Wisconsin the problem was not a shortage of fish, it was a
shortage of leadership." Metz was a Wisconsin State Legislator
for 12 years and chaired the American Indian Study Committee
during that time.
