Despite overwhelming opposition from Dene, Metis, and white civil servants,
the plan to divide the North West Territories into two areas has passed.
Nunavut (Our land) will comprise the Eastern Canadian Arctic. Total popu-
lation 21,000, of which the vast majority are inuit.
