Did not mean to suggest in my comments about the nativenet survey that
ethnicity be omitted from the questionnaire. Hardly. What I said was
the question should not be precoded. In other words, ask it as a fill-in
blank. Yes,it will be more difficult for coding, but it is far
more respectful of the person answering to avoid pre-coded answers.
As you know, a primary identification can be colour, ethnicity, or religion.
Sometimes, even nationality. If you leave room for comments, you may find
out something useful because people always have reasons for their own self-
identifications.
At least that is my own experience with user-friendly questionnaire design.
