Walapai and computers/education

On Monday, April 27, I chanced to hear part of a report on NPR
(noon, Central Daylight Time) on recent changes on the Walapai Reservation
in northwestern Arizona. According to the report, the tribal council has
set up a computer lab and are teaching their young people to use and *repair*
the computers. I wonder if they have an e-mail address. Until ten years ago,
none of the teachers at the Indian school on the reservation spoke Walapai.
This was a serious problem, since most Walapai speak this Yuman language at
home, and few children come to the first or second grades speaking English.
All 16 teachers are now bilingual, or have aides who are. Does anyone on
this list have more information? Sounds like exciting things are happening
on the Walapai Reservation.

Note from Gary

This is probably a good place to mention once again that there is a separate
NativeNet mailing list for education subjects. It is about to be moved to a
listserv at Indiana University. Those who are already on the list should NOT
subscribe to the list (instructions given below), since your address will be
transferred over without your having to do anything.

Those who are not currently on that list (where I will post a copy of this
article from Grosvenor once the list has been set up) can join by sending a

subscribe nat-edu Your Name

message to indycms.bitnet.

DO NOT SEND A SUBSCRIBE MESSAGE IF YOU ARE ON THE CURRENT EDUCATION LIST.
