*The plebescite in the Northwest Territories provided a "yes" result on
the question of the creation of an Inuit homeland. The vote was over-
whelmingly "yes" in the eastern Arctic, and narrowly won in the west. The
result begins the process of creating a new territory to be called Nunavut
by 1999. However, Bill Erasmus, spokesperson for the Deni nation, said
that the issues of where the eventual border will be drawn is still an issue
of discussion between the Inuit, Deni and Meti tribes. The final tally in
the plebescite was 54% "yes."
