Memorial Walk for the Victims of the Sandcreek Massacre
Close to seventy Europeans, Native Americans and Americans walking
across the country from New York City to Nevada were joined by the
Colorado Native American Community for a memorial walk to the site
of the Sandcreek Massacre. With their presence at Sandcreek, the
walkers hoped to draw attention to the meaning of the Sandcreek
Massacre where nearly 150 Southern Cheyenne were slaughtered under
the command of Colonel Chivington. The walkers and local supporters
began the walk at the Sandcreek memorial sign on Route 96, one mile
east of Chivington, CO.
A press conference was held near the site to call for an immediate
halt to the genocide of indigenous people that continues in this
country and around the world. Speakers discussed the murders of
over 300 Lakota American Indian Movement supporters killed on the
Pine Ridge reservation form 1973 to 1976 and made a call for the
release of Leonard Peltier, a Lakota man being unjustly held for
the murders of two FBI agents. This walk also hoped to draw
attention to deaths that continue on the Hopi and Navajo
reservations due to coal and uranium mining and forced relocation.
Walk Across America for Mother Earth began at the United Nations in
New York on January 31st and will end October 12th at the Western
Shoshone Nation in Nevada, the most bombed nation on earth. The US
government has been using these lands since 1951 as a Test Site for
already over 800 nuclear weapons tests. This is against the spirit
of the Peace and Friendship Treaty of Ruby Valley signed in 1863.
The walkers call on the US government to honor the treaties which
have been signed with Indian Nations. Eight hundred treaties were
made, 371 were ratified by Congress.... and all have been broken by
the US government and continue to be violated today.
