Original-Subject: Plastic Medicine Men

I don't know if this belongs in the "natchat" or "Native-l" lists, but here
goes anyway.

[ This article is being relayed via the NATIVE-L list, which is the list
to which Lisa sent the article. However, if anyone wants to re-open
the issue and discuss it more, please do so via the NATCHAT list (send

Some time ago there was a discussion on phony or at least suspect
medicine men/spritual leaders. Jamake Highwater's name came up as a
controversial and prominent figure. Akwesasne Notes published an expose
of him by activist Hank Adams that a number of people took issue with.

While looking through back issues of Notes for something else, I
ran across a followup to that story. This consists of verbatim letters
received by Notes from Jamake Highwater/Gregory Markopolous/J Marks
refuting Hank Adams assertions that the three men are one and the same.

For those with access to Akwesasne Notes, check the Early Winter 1985
(volume 17, number 6) issue, page five. Those without access can email me
and I will be happy to send a photocopy by snailmail.
