OVERVIEW OF THE RAINFOREST CHAUTAUQUA:
......To Native Americans, "Chautauqua" meant "spiritual place."
Over 100 years ago Chautauquas became the major source of
entertainment and culture for rural America. At its peak in 1924,
an estimated 30 million Americans-one third of the population-
gathered under the shade of large brown tents enjoying lectures,
music, dance and drama. These Chautauquas helped to awaken the
social conscience of the rural population and exposed millions of
people to their first taste of cultural awareness.
......It is in this spirit that the Rainforest Action Network and its
grassroots coalition of Rainforest Action Groups invite you to the
Rainforest Chautauqua 1992. It is our goal to offer at this gathering
an opportunity to celebrate the rainforest movement and its
accomplishments to date; to network and strategize for future
solidarity and to provide campaign and organizational skills
workshops.
......Perhaps, most importantly, this will be our chance to gather in
the spirit of a Chautauqua, to internalize our connection with the
earth and each other. It is difficult to work effectively on issues of
the rainforest insulated from the reality of tribal life. Chautauqua
1992 promises to be a healthy blend of nature, play and awareness.
......Activists, ecologists, native people, musicians, poets and artists
will provide a variety of perspectives on the ecological and social
ramifications of deforestation. This is an opportunity for all to share
information and strengthen our network, while having a blast.
......While serving to educate and entertain, Chautauqua's ultimate
goal will be to catalyze the grassroots action necessary to defend the
last remaining rainforests and its inhabitants. Their fate is our own.
DESCRIPTION OF SITE:
......This year's Rainforest Chautauqua is located in the hills of
Mayacamas Ridge close to the town of Glen Ellen, California in the
midst of wine country. The specific site is 30 acres of meadows and
hills surrounded by dense forests and creeks. The land is near the
ocean and has abundant recreational possibilities and is close to San
Francisco.
......The camping site is secluded yet has access to an Olympic-size
swimming pool and a stage for speakers and entertainment. There
are campsites for tents and sleeping bags. All meals are furnished
and will consist of vegetarian fare. "Work exchanges" are available
on a limited basis for part of the weekend fee. There will be
adequate toilet facilities and hot showers.

Notes on the Agenda:
1. Please submit suggestions/amendments for proposed agenda by July 31st.
2. We recognize that the agenda is packed full but you should feel
free to skip out on any of the scheduled sessions to take a break,
network with others, etc. We tried to incorporate more free time this
year by adding a day and devoting all of one afternoon and evening
to playtime. The ratio of work to free time is about 3:2.
3. Each of the "Workshop" time slots will consist of 4-5 workshops
taking place simultaneously. A workshop leader will conduct these
sessions. Please let us know if you have a workshop that you would
like to lead.
4. The "Full Circle Discussions" (which refer to all of the sessions
except the "workshops") will be plenary meetings.
