On our way back from New Mexico, Grosvenor and I took a short side trip
into Oklahoma, to see a major retrospective exhibition of the works of
Chiricahua Apache sculptor Allan Houser. The exhibition is taking place
all summer long, June 10 through September 13, at the University of
Oklahoma art museum and is titled _Allan Houser; a Life in Art_.

I have always admired Allan Houser's sculpture, but seeing so much of it
in one place was truly awesome! Pieces from the range of his career were
included, the early representational ones right on through the more recent
and abstract pieces. A large number of works have been gathered in the
galleries and in the gardens outside the museum, and they have been care-
fully and tastefully displayed. They include a wide variety of materials,
including bronze, stone, steel, early wood carvings, and some early paintings.
The exhibit is well worth seeing if any of you plan to be in that area in the
near future.

We have known many of Allan's family for some time. His mother, Blossom
Haozous (Allan's original Apache surname), was one of Grosvenor's original
informants during his field work with the Ft. Sill Apaches back in 1963,
and we subsequently met two sisters, Pat and Ruy, and his nephew Michael
Darrow. They still live in Oklahoma, near Allan's birthplace (on a farm in
the vicinity of Apache, OK).

One wonderful bit of news we learned from the family while we were there
is that Allan has just been awarded the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF ART! He was
scheduled to receive it from President Bush either this weekend or last.
What an honor!
