ACTION! ACTION!! ACTION!

Protest, August 3rd, Against UK Paper industry's Destruction of

Canada's Forgotten Rainforest and Genocide of Native American
Culture

IT'S A CLEARCUT ISSUE!!

Date: Monday, 3rd August 1992
From: NativeNet@gnosys.svle.ma.us
Time: 10am - onwards
Place: Scott Ltd Pulp Mill, Northfleet Docks,
Crete Hall Road, Gravesend, Kent, England.

THE PROTEST

In Britain's first temperate rainforest Day of Action,
protestors from all over UK aim to close Scott Ltd Pulp Mill for
the day. Business will be disrupted by a mass trespass, and
Scott's mill and dock facilities will be occupied and blockaded.
Earth First! will will hand a letter to Scott's Director,
demanding that the company withdraw their participation in the
destruction of the forests and that they convert to recycled
pulp. The action forms part of an International Day of Action.
In British Columbia, activists will blockade logging roads and
"tree sit" threatened trees measuring up to 300ft.

THE ISSUES

The forgotten rainforests of British Columbia, Canada, are being
cleared at the rate of 700 hectares per day. Now only fragmented
areas remain and at the present rate of destruction, only the
protected 3% of the rainforest will be left in 10 - 15 years
time.
Rowan Tilly of Earth First! UK says: " Columbus invaded the
Americas 500 years ago. We played cowboys and indians. Now we
play loggers and indians and we flush the forests down the
toilet."
The destruction of the forest also entails the cultural genocide
of many native American Indians who rely upon it for their
material and spritual survival.
Peter Knighton of the Carmanah People says: " The undamaged
continuity of this environment is essential to the continuity of
the culture and identity of the native people. We cannot live and
bear witness to the torture and death of our cherished Mother
Earth. The clear cut harvesting is illegal to the native law of
my people."

Canada is the biggest UK supplier of paper pulp. Scott Ltd are
using pulp from the primary old growth forests of Canada for
throwaway products such as Andrex Toilet Paper and Fiesta Kitchen
towels. They cannot claim to be concerned about the environment
when only 8% of the pulp they use is recycled. Scott products
include: Andrex, Scotties Hankies, Baby Fresh Wipes, Bodyform and
Libra sanitary towels and Pennwise toilet rolls.

EARTH FIRST!

Earth First! is Britain's fastest growing radical environmental
movement, promoting direct action in the defence of the planet.
This action is the latest in a series of actions against the
importation of rainforest products (Tilbury Docks 12/91,
Liverpool Docks 3/92 and Timbmet Ltd timber yard 5/92). Earth
First! seeks to confront perpetrators of rainforest destruction
in highly visual, creative and effective actions.
