The statement of your research interest is puzzling. All tribal-run
enterprises that I know of are cooperatives, that is corporations in which
the tribal members are stockholders. If there are any such enterprises
involved in manufacturing, I am unaware of them. I am sorry to be unable to
give you specific references, but I hope you will find the following
suggestions helpful.

1) Harry Getty, an anthropologist who is (or was) at the University of
Arizona, did a study of the San Carlos Apache cattle industry in the 1960s.
Consult the latest edition of George Peter Murdock's __ Ethnographic
Bibliography of North America __, HRAF Press, under COYOTERO for the
references. A former colleague at the University of Illinois, Loretta Fowler,
did her Ph.D. dissertation (1970) on the Northern Arapaho Ranch in Wyoming.
This is a rather unique cattle industry, because the steers and heifers are
cycled through a series of ranges before being marketed. A search in
__ Dissertation Abstracts __ should give you the title, and a copy can be
obtained from University Microfilms in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

2) The Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico and the Rocky Boy
Reservation in Montana both have tribal-owned ski resorts. I know of no
studies of their history and organization, but the tribal councils might be
consulted for information.

3) Several tribes on the Northwest Coast are involved in commercial
fishing. An interesting comparison could be made with the Northern Paiute of
the Pyramid Lake Reservation in Nevada. They have been involved in *inland,
freshwater* commercial fishing since the 1890s. You might consult the
following for information:

Knack, Martha C., and Omer C. Stewart. __ As Long as the River
Shall Run: An Ethnohistory of the Pyramid Lake Reservation __.
University of California Press, 1984.

4) Ask the librarians at an academic library in your area if they have
access to online bibliographic data bases, such as DIALOG. By combining
searches of several data bases, they may turn up useful references in a
variety of publications.

I hope these suggestions prove useful.
