I suggest that you contact Nancy Oestreich Lurie of the Milwaukee
Public Museum about this. Dr. Lurie was involved in the early
organization (ca. 1970) of the Menominee group DRUMS which
worked successfully for the restoration of the Menominee
as a "federally recognized sovereign Indian tribe" (PL93-197,
December 22, 1973). I think she could provide some insightful
comments regarding what was going on in the 1950s. Here are
