NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, OCTOBER 28, 1992

"ICUC URGES NDP CONVENTION TO STOP URANIUM MINING"

The Inter-Church Uranium Committee (ICUC) starts up a
campaign to resist the planned uranium mine expansions planned
for Saskatchewan. ICUC urges the NDP convention, November 6 and
7, to keep the NDP anti uranium development policy and to act
accordingly in Saskatchewan to stop the planned expansions to
Northern uranium mines. A complete stop of uranium mining would
contribute to a clean environment, respect to native peoples
rights, and help to stop proliferation of nuclear knowledge.

ICUC will tour Northern communities early November to share
with local people their concerns about uranium mining and
discuss possible resistance and alternatives to uranium mining.
ICUC will be assisted by Lance Hughes, director of Native
Americans for a Clean Environment (NACE) and Dirk Jan Dullemond,
organizer of the European Peace Pilgrimage 1992 (EPP92) and
participant in the Healing Global Wounds Forum and Ceremony.

Lance Hughes is director of NACE based in Oklahoma near the
Sequoyah Fuels uranium conversion facility. Yellowcake, from
Saskatchewan, is converted to uranium hexafluoride for use in
civilian and military nuclear programs. There are many problems
being experienced by workers at the plant as well as by people
living in the area, many of whom are native people. Expansion of
the Saskatchewan uranium mines has a direct influence on the
dangers around the Sequoyah Fuels plant since a large portion of
Saskatchewan uranium goes to Sequoyah Fuels. Mr. Hughes will
inform the Saskatchewan people on the severe environmental
problems caused by Sequoyah Fuels and will ask Saskatchewan
people to stop shipping uranium there.

Dirk Jan Dullemond, from the Netherlands, is organizer of
and participant in EPP92 and participant in the "Healing Global
Wounds Indigenous Forum and Ceremony", held in Las Vegas Nevada
and hosted by the Western Shoshone National Council. During his
walk and participation in the forum he experienced the overall
negative influences of all links in the nuclear, civilian and
military chain. Dirk Jan urges for a Comprehensive Test Ban
Treaty and asks Saskatchewan people to stop uranium mining in
order to stop proliferation of nuclear weapons.
