COULD YOU PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE ON BULLETIN BOARDS
OR NEWSGROUPS AT YOUR NETWORK. IF YOU FEEL APPROPRIATE PLEASE FORWARD
THIS TO OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED. WE WOULD BE MOST GRATEFUL!!

CONAIE (Confederation Of Indigenous Nationalities Of Ecuador) is
asking for your attention and support for their problems and for
their actions. We are just beginning to use of E-Mail, and therefore
have little knowledge of organizations that would have an interest in
our cause (let alone their respective E-Mail addresses or conferences
about related subjects).

We would like to use this opportunity to distribute our greetings to
the world with a message concerning the 500th anniversary of the inva-
sion of the Americas and about the problems of the indigenous people
in Ecuador. This way we want to get in touch with those of you out
there who would be interested to hear our side of the story. Of course
we are also very interested to hear YOUR opinions and suggestions!

With the great help of the people at ECUANEX.EC (our host node) we
have already sent this request & press release to the addresses below.
Please help us by posting it and/or forwarding it to others.....

Million THANKS!

CONAIE
CONFEDERATION OF INDIGENOUS NATIONALITIES OF ECUADOR

People of the World:

Today, the 12 of October, 1992, we complete 500 years since the
history of humanity was overturned: the continent ABYA YALA ('World
of Life' in the Kuna language) was 'discovered' by the hungry and
greedy eyes of the European colonists.

The powerful and highly developed civilizations in our continent ,
were up against an enemy that, although it had been prophesized, was
unknown. "It got dark in the middle of the night..." The original
peoples were attacked with violence and today history tells the story
of the largest genocide known to humanity.

Despite this tragedy, we were able to resist and today we vigorously
present ourselves, continuing the prophesies that say "When the
Eagle of the North meets the Condor of the South, no force will be
able to detain them." The indigenous people of America, united in
the Continental Indigenous Alliance, emphatically reject any attempt
to celebrate such a disastrous event, and we remind people that we
are completing 500 YEARS OF INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE.

We want to say to say to the world that we are prepared to defend our
continuity as peoples, guarding our cultures, languages, beliefs and
traditional knowledge.

We believe that our communitarian way of life can serve as a
contribution to humanity: to treat with respect the natural world
which protects and feeds us; to preserve economic stability, and
justice. We have not forgotten solidarity, which is an arm which
strengthens us.

The diversity of our cultures enriches all of humanity. Becoming
more familiar with each other is the starting point of a new
historical process that can allow us to live in a dignified and just
manner during the next millennium.
