NativeNet - how to get usage documentation

I'd like to just offer a few items of information for new members of one
or more of the NativeNet mailing lists, and to remind those who have been
with us for a while of sources of documentation on how things work, so that
you can have a better experience with the lists.

There are several information files which you can retrieve easily by sending
a message to the address "listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu" or "listserv@tamvm1.bitnet"
(or just "LISTSERV AT TAMVM1" if you are using a Bitnet-based system). These
files contain instructions on how to subscribe to some NativeNet lists you may
have even known about, how to unsubscribe or temporarily have mail to your
account suspended, and how to retrieve copies of articles from the archives of
the NATIVE-L and NAT-1492 lists, as well as how to post to any of the NativeNet
mailing lists.

To get a basic set of information, send a message containing:

get nn-intro intro native-l
get nn-intro archives native-l
get nn-intro lists native-l
get nn-intro purpose native-l

to one of the LISTSERV addresses given above.

(N.B.: that's NATIVE-L, *not* NATIVE-1, a mistake people often make.)

You may often find yourself able to answer a question by searching through
the NATIVE-L or NAT-1492 archives. As is explained by the "nn-intro archives"
document, you can do a full-text search through a database of all articles
posted to either of these two mailing lists since they were initiated. (The
NATIVE-L archive only goes back to early 1991, since it has only been operated
via the TAMVM1 LISTSERV since that time. Under special circumstances, I can
search through the previous 1.5 years worth of archives which I maintain on
backup media.)

I hope that everyone who has not already done so will at least retrieve a copy
of the "nn-intro intro" and "nn-intro lists" files, since they contain infor-
mation which is basic to making good use of the NativeNet facility.

Please let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Gary
