I strongly recommend "Lakota Woman", by Mary Crow Dog. It's about
Mary Crow Dog, (who's (part) Lakota) her childhood (boarding school), her
teens; aimless, drugs and alcoholism. Later Mary joins AIM and the book
describes the violence at the reservation Pine Ridge during the seventies
and the other serious wrongs being done. It also describes the Lakota
traditions.
Another book is "Mother Earth Spirituality, Native American paths to
healing ourselves and our world" by Ed McGaa, Eagle Man (he's from Oglala,
Pine Ridge). He describes a tiny bit about the history ("Pilgrims,
Founding Fathers and the Indians") and a bit about his own childhood. Most
of the book is about the Lakota ceremonies, what they mean, how they came
to the Lakota people, etc. All this very detailed.
Hope this helps,
Aleida
