AUSTRIA'S BOLD TROPICAL TIMBER LEGISLATION WAVERING

YOUR SUPPORT OF THE AUSTRIAN GOVERNMENT'S ATTEMPT TO SAVE TROPICAL
FORESTS URGENTLY NEEDED
This Friday, December 4th, the Austrian Government will repeal
their legislation which called for the labelling of tropical
timber imported into Austria and the application of levies to make
tropical timber less attractive to consumers. This move is due to
threats of retaliatory measures against Austria by Malaysia, the
world's largest exporter of tropical timber.
Austria is the first country to take a bold stance in support of
tropical rainforests and rainforest peoples. The Austrian
Government needs to hear from everyone who supports their initial
goal to reduce the consumption of tropical timber in their
country. Send faxes and telegrams immediately to the Austrian
officials listed here and on the following page. Also, send
letters to the Austrian Embassy in your country and the Austrian
Ambassador at the United Nations. Contact representatives of your
government and urge them to fax letters of support to Austrian
officials.
