Book Title: THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE TREE
Author: Forrest Carter
Read by: Peter Coyote
Book copyright: 1976
Tape copyright: 1992
Produced by: "Audio Literature"
Cost: somewhere between $15 & $20 ... sorry I can't find the box
Size: 4 tapes totalling 3 hours
[ There is some serious question as to whether Forrest Carter is what he
claims to be. I read an article in the _New York Times_ (I think it
covered most of a page) on 4 October 1991 (I can place the date since
I was in NYC at the "Native Voices" conference at Columbia University)
which was something of an expose' of Carter as an imposter. Perhaps
someone else on the list can supply more details. If I come across
the article, I'll provide a summary. --Gary ]
I also have KEEPERS OF THE EARTH; Native American Stories. Written by
Michael J. Caduto & Joseph Bruchac; Read by Joseph Bruchac. Cost was $16.95.
As it happens, I had most of these stories on other tapes from other sources,
so I am interested in selling this tape set to the highest bidder. I've only
played it once, and would let it go for $14 including postage ... such a deal.
Several people have written to me requesting a complete list of all the
story tapes I have, personally, along with the publishing company. I'll do
this when I get rid of the winter crud so I can "dig" without choking.
In general, I have found that the best source for buying Native American
stories on tape is
1. Indian Museums
2. Park Visitor's Center
3. Huge Book Stores
4. Large Museums like the San Francisco Academy of Science
5. University Book Stores/Gift Shops (Lowe Museum had several)
6. Catalogs -- like the Smithsonian
And a couple of times, Crown Books has surprised me with Story Tapes ... but
usually its just self-help stuff. I urge any/all of you to have your own
Public Library to acquire ones like The Education of Little Tree; its a winner!
