The following article announces a new mailing list at TAMVM1, and also gives
basic instructions on retrieving articles from any of the NativeNet mailing
lists (except for NATCHAT, which does not have an article archive). It might
make for interesting reading for new NativeNet list members who may not have
been aware of the existence of the article archives or of how to use them.

As of today, 1 February 1993, there is a new NativeNet LISTSERV-based mailing
list in operation via the TAMVM1 host at Texas A & M University. This list,
called "NAT-LANG," is for the purpose of exchanging information and having
discussions on the subject of the many languages developed and used by the
First Peoples of various parts of the world. The list takes over the function
of the Native languages list, which I have operated by means of my own system
for the past two years. Having a LISTSERV-based list will permit more effic-
ient operation, and the easy maintanance of an archive of articles, as now
exists for the NATIVE-L, NAT-1492, and NAT-EDU lists (NAT-EDU is based at
INDYCMS rather than at TAMVM1).

Everyone who was formerly subscribed to the Native languages list should have
received a message from the TAMVM1 LISTSERV this morning informing him or her
that s/he is now subscribed to NAT-LANG. If you are not on the NAT-LANG list
and would like to subscribe, simply send a message to the LISTSERV address at
TAMVM1 ("listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu" for Internet users) saying:

subscribe nat-lang Your Name

where "Your Name" is replaced with your own given name (*NOT* your electronic
mail address, which is automatically picked up from the header of the message
you send). You should receive verification of your subscription within a day
of sending your subscription request.

(Bitnet users can send "tell listserv at tamvm1 subscribe nat-lang Your Name")

In order to access articles from the on-line NAT-LANG archive maintained at
TAMVM1, which now contains most of the articles exchanged on the Native lang-
uage list during the past two years, you can send a set of IBMish "JCL" ("Job
Control Language") statements of the form:

// job echo=no
database search dd=rules
//rules dd *
select * in nat-lang
index
/*

in order to obtain a full list of the contents of the archive. You can do the
same for the NATIVE-L, NAT-1492, and NAT-EDU lists as well (but be sure to send
requests for the NAT-EDU archive to "listserv@indycms.iupui.edu" instead). In
order to limit the amount of output you will receive (which may exceed the
default limit of 2000 lines of text), you can modify the "select" line to read
something like:

select * in nat-lang since january
or
select * in nat-lang since november 1992

(Complete instructions on the database facility are available by sending a
message containing "info database" to any LISTSERV. NativeNet-specific
instructions can be obtained by sending "get nn-intro archives" to the
TAMVM1 LISTSERV address. These documents explain how to obtain articles
based on full-text keyword searches.)

To increase the default limit of 2000 lines, you can add "outlim=" to the
"search" statement:

database search dd=rules outlim=4000

To retrieve individual articles, you can replace the "index" line in the
JCL shown above with one reading "print" followed by a comma-separated
list of article numbers. For example:

print 1,2,23,10,44

(It is not necessary to first obtain a list of articles and then use the
article numbers to actually retrieve articles. The documents cited above
explain a more direct approach.)

Following is the result of sending the "index" request within the job
shown above. The "Item #" column indicates the numbers you can use in a
"print" statement, as shown (directly) above. If you have any questions
about the use of this facility, please direct them to me.
