Man, that is one tough group of people to find info on! I found Swanton's
book, which had a listing of them, but didn't share much more than has been
offered here already. Atakapa does refer to a group of people linguistically
related--two groups mentioned are the Akikosa (who Cabeza de Vaca thought the
Hans were, as did Swanton) and the Deadose. I've got one more museum shop to
go through, but more often than not, I'm finding Atakapa as a listing, with
little else to follow up with. The population figures in Swanton's book
suggest that it was a small group. The language seems to be extinct. If NMAH
proves as futile as the rest in this search, I guess I'll call Cesare Marino
who works on the Handbook, and see if he knows someone who can enlighten us.

Also, many thanks to you who sent in info for our Native Humor Conference, the
folklife festival, and Heritage Month. I've finally been able to pass on the
info to the council, and Liz Hill and Andrea Hanley have said that I should
post their work numbers, so you can call them directly with questions, info,
and whatnot. Liz is at (202)-357-3167, Andrea at (202)-786-2044. Also Christina
Burke is at (202)-357-4760. At the meeting we also agreed that once a month I
should post things that are happening around here for those who live near us,
or might be visiting.

Thanks again for your input, and if you think of anything that might be helpful
for the humor conference, the folklife festival, or Heritage month, please
let me know. Happy Valentine's Day all!!
