DUTY LOCATION: Washington, DC
AREA OF CONSIDERATION: All sources (status and non-status may apply)
DUTIES:
The incumbent develops new reference series and programs to enhance
scientific research and provide an array of reference services in the subject
areas of cultural and physical anthropology, ethnology, and cultural
linguistics. Advises subordinates and provides technical instruction to
scientific and professional staff on literature searching and bibliographic
services. Performs comprehensive bibliographic searches utilizing a wide
variety of published and online sources where materials may be in any
language or format and citations incomplete or inaccurate. Selects
matierials for the collection. Manages the branch library and supervises the
work of technicians and volunteers in library support duties. Monitors
current circulation file and resolves problems in cataloged and bound
volumes received in the anthropology collection. Maintains a current knowledge
of developments in the subject field through individual study, communication
with staff, and attendance at professional seminars and conferences.
Participates in special projects and develops department-wide public relations
and outreach programs for researchers and staff using the library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
All applicants must meet the requirements for professional education
in Library Science or possess equivalent experience as shown in A, B, or C
below--
A. Completion of a full academic year of graduate study in Library
Science plus completion of a bachelor's degree;
OR
B. Completion of a "5th-year" bachelor's degree in Library Science
plus at least 1 year of library experience;
OR
C. A total, in some combination, of not less than 5 years of college-
level education, training, and/or experience which has provided a
knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and
technique of professional librarianship.
PLUS 1 OR 2 BELOW:
1. A master's degree or 2 full academic years of graduate study in
Library Science;
OR
2. Professional or advanced experience or graduate study; (a) one
year of experience in librarianship which included the performance,
supervision, or administration of one or more major functional areas of
librarianship; (b) one year of experience which provided the applicant with
the knowledge and abilities required by the position.
PLUS A, B, OR C BELOW:
A. One additional year of experience in librarianship; or 1 year of
additional experience as described above;
OR
B. A doctoral degree or 3 years of graduate education in Library
Science;
OR
C. Completion of graduate study in a subject matter related to this
position (doctoral degree or 3 full academic years of graduate education).

Institution by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Nonstatus applications
will be forwarded to the Delegated Examining Unit for ranking, rating and
referral. Status candidates who wish to be rated under both merit promotion
and competitive procedures must submit TWO complete applications.
