Friends-
The University of Arizona is still trying to find partners to
build telescopes on the Apache religious site of Mt. Graham. Their latest
target is my home institution, the University of Pittsburgh. Faculty
astronomers want Pitt to participate. There is an active student group
lobbying against participation, and last week an Arizona environmentalist
and a member of the Apache tribal council were here talking to the press,
faculty and most importantly the chancellor, J. Dennis O'Connor.
We feel that O'Connor can be convinced to avoid participating
in the telescope project if there is enough public pressure to do so.
I would like to urge anyone concerned about this issue to write a letter
expressing your feelings to the chancellor at the following address:

J. Dennis O'Connor, Chancellor
Office of the Chancellor
107 Cathedral of Learning
University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA 15260

Thanks for any help you can give. Although the Pittsburgh area
has a small Indian population and an Indian center, I am sure Arizona thinks
that we are far enough removed from the heart of Indian country to be
able to talk Pitt into participating without anyone in Indian country
knowing anything about it. Let's show them they are wrong, and that
ALL of the Americas is Indian Country!
