I just got this from the Friends Committee on National Legislation:
there's a bill in Congress now which would overturn the Supreme Court
ruling which allowed the state of Oregon to outlaw the use of peyote in
religious ceremonies:
> THE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM RESTORATION ACT. The Religious Freedom
> Restoration Act (known as RFRA) will be introduced in both houses
> of Congress on Thursday, March 11. RFRA would restore the
> "compelling interest" standard used by courts in free exercise of
> religion cases. That standard was abandoned in the Supreme
> Court's 1990 decision in the case called Employment Division of
> Oregon v. Smith. Under this bill, courts would once again be
> required to "balance" the interests of the government against the
> constitutional rights of any person whose right to practice
> religion is in conflict with a government action or law.
>
> This week, the Catholic Conference of Bishops indicated that it
> no longer opposed RFRA, clearing the way for this bill to move
> swiftly through Congress.
>
> ACTION: Please call your senators and urge them to become
> original co-sponsors of RFRA. They should contact Sen. Kennedy
> MA or Sen. Hatch UT to sign on to the bill. Please also contact
> your representative and urge him/her to become an original co-
> sponsor of RFRA. Representatives should contact Rep. Schumer NY
> or Rep. Cox CA to sign on.
