BEYOND SURVIVAL
The Waking Dreamer Ends The Silence
April 16 to 18, 1993
Canadian Museum of Civilization,
Hull, Quebec
Introduction
Beyond Survival is an international conference of Indigenous
writers, performing artists and visual artists who will meet from
April 16 - 18, 1993 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull,
Quebec, Canada. The three day event will include working sessions,
discussions and performances by Canadian and International
Indigenous artists. With writers and artists from the Americas,
the Circumpolar region, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific
Islands, Japan, the Asian Pacific region, the Caribbean, and Africa
participating, Beyond Survival promises to be an exciting event for
the International Year of Indigenous Peoples.
History of the Project
The impetus to stage an International gathering of Indigenous
writers, performing and visual artists in Canada arose during the
1990 International Indigenous Education Conference in New Zealand.
A group of Indigenous writers, artists and performers met in a
special session to discuss the role of the arts and cultural
expression in education; the relationship between artistic and
cultural expression and levels of literacy; the impact of
stereotyping and racism; and the designation of various kinds of
cultural expression as "folklore", "craft", and "artifact".
Participants in this session decided to organize a conference to
address these issues and develop a long-term program of action in
response.
Hosts and Sponsors
The conference is being hosted by the En'owkin International School
of Writing, the Canadian Native Arts Foundation and the Canadian
Museum of Civilization. To date financial assistance and "in kind"
support has also been received from the Department of
Communications Canada; Secretary of State Canada; Canada Council;
Native Women's Resource Centre; Writer's Union of Canada, UNESCO;
Government of the Northwest Territories; Inuit Tapirisat of Canada;
Ontario Ministry of Culture and Communications, Native Community
Branch; Ontario Arts Council; Theytus Books; Government of
Greenland; New Zealand Arts Council; Australia Council for the
Arts. In addition, "Beyond Survival" has been endorsed by UNESCO
as an offical activity for the World Decade for Cultural
Development.
