The Washington Post. Washington -- The Smithsonian Institution has chosen
the architect for the National Museum of the American Indian, scheduled to
open in 2001 on the last available plot of land on the Mall.
The Philadelphia firm of Geddes Brecher Qualls Cunningham will design the
museum in association with Douglas Cardinal, a Canadian architect of the
Blackfoot tribe, and with help from Johnpaul Jones, an Indian from Oklahoma.
The firm will use guidelines developed by the museum's director, W. Richard
West Jr., with the architecture firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. In-
formation gathered in recent months through extensive meetings with American
Indian groups will help determine the shape of the museum. Venturi, Scott
Brown would stay on as consultants.
