We've had some discussions of the Ainu during the past few years, which
you could pick up from the NATIVE-L archives:

// job echo=no
get nn-intro archives native-l
database search dd=rules cpulim=10
//rules dd *
select "Ainu" in native-l
print all
/*

(sent to "listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu"; leave out the "get nn-intro..."
line if you already have a copy of the article explaining how to use
the archives).

Also, I saw a brief news story on "Today's Japan" (produced by NHK, Tokyo)
a couple of weeks ago saying that an Ainu man has been elected to the Diet
(the lower house of the Japanese Parliament). There was a brief statement
from him during that story, during which he said that he will be striving
to raise public awareness about his people, and working to protect their
rights as a minority within the Japanese society.

You might also try the Usenet "soc.culture.japan" newsgroup (which you can
access via the University of North Carolina "laUNChpad" BBS via telnet if
you don't get Usenet news on your own system):

| For those who do not have local access to Usenet, UNC Chapel Hill offers
| a full system open to everyone. To access, telnet bbs.oit.unc.edu and
| log on as bbs. You are even allowed to register so that you may post
| to Usenet. Personally, I find it very informative. I hope many of you
| will try it out.

Please let us know what you might learn.
