mascot names

As an alumnus of Arkansas State University, I just received an alumni
update newsletter. A small article mentions that this spring the
Faculty Senate approved a resolution to begin phasing out the mascot
(a stereotypic big-nosed Indian with fringed leggings and no top,
wielding a stone tomahawk) and to change the mascot name from
"Indians" to something else. The student government association had
conducted an opinion poll, but results were not given in the article.
The newsletter asked for the opinion of the alumni about the matter.
While the faculty apparently are becoming more sensitive to this
issue, I doubt that the student body is as aware or caring. At
football games, someone dressed up in "traditional" garb (actually
something of a mix with emphasis on plains) usually parades about
before the game and after a score. However, at least there is some
consideration toward this end. It might be helpful if some of you
wanted to write to the president with your feelings. Even if
students are not for it, sometimes the administration will consider
the image it portrays and respond accordingly. The address is:
