Kathleen Higgins, "Origins of the Grass Dance." In Indians at Work, Vol. 3:
47 (1936). Pretty funky, but it has ritual origins text of the dance.
Walter McClintock, "Dances of the Blackfoot Indians." Masterkey, Vol. 11:
77-86, 111-21. Substantive, well-written and first hand, but, hey, Walter
was a white guy, what can I say? (1937)
James Howard, "Notes on the Dakota Grass Dance." Southwest Journal of
Anthropology, Vol. 7:82-85. Brief, well-written survey of the history of
the dance...not bad but still lacking subtly. (1951)
Regina Flannery, "The Changing Form and Functions of the Gros Ventre Grass
Dance." In Primitive Man (check that title!), Vol. 20: 39-70. Excellent!
This woman really knows what she's talking about, maybe it has something to
do with spending 20 years+ with these people.
