There is a book called Black Indians, which came out a couple of years ago.
I can't remember the name of the author, and a quick run to Natural History's
shop only showed me that it's not now on their shelves. If no one points it
out by tomorrow, I'll run to American History's shop and find it there. It's
another of those books I want but haven't yet bought. One of my black friends
is very interested in reading it, and is nagging at me to get it, so...
Also Lisa Mitten's recent list has Africans and Native Americans: Color, Race
& Caste in the Evolution of Red-Black Peoples, which ought to help.
I've seen another reference ca. 1963 by a guy named Willis, something like
Divide and Conquer, Red Black and White in the Southeast (?). It tells of how
the early euro-settlers were horrified at the thought of natives and africans
uniting against them, and went to great, and official, pains to keep the two
groups at odds with one another. As the first book explains, they weren't very
successful at it. I'll check out the info on this one too.
Tomorrow I'll check out the African American sections to see if we have
anything on Tarrant...I hope this helps.
SI Steve
