INDIGENOUS UPRISING CONTINUES
THE AMERICAN CUP SHOULD NOT BE A MASK
The America Cup Soccer games are a blanket with which the government and some
state institutions want to hide the harsh reality of our country, and quiet the
voices of protest against the economic and social policies of the government an
d the national congress.
The chants of "long live CONAIE" during the inauguration of the games at the At
ahualpa stadium,and the "boo's" received by President Sixto Duran Ballen, demons
trate the solidarity of other sectors of society with the indigenous uprising an
d with the demands of the indigenous peoples and people of the countryside.
We point out that although sports unify the country, it is the common understan
ding of the serious problems facing our people that truly brings about a feeling
of solidarity.
We reject the government attempts to present a mask of peace and tranquility in
Ecuador.
We denounce that during the next few days the Congress will approve a privatiza
tion project that will cause the appropriation of public goods by powerful econo
mic groups, foreign and national, who are allied with government functionaries.
We denounce the permanent violation of human rights, militarization and repress
ion in the indigenous communities, and the illegal arrest warrants for the leade
rs of our movement.
We denounce the assassination of our brother. On Wednesday, June 16, while the
indigenous communities of Imbabura belonging to the provincial organizations FIC
I and FICAPI were marching in a peaceful protest from the zone of Pinzaqui to Co
tacachi, with the presence of police and military personnel, a white Trooper wit
h tinted windows and no license plates sped out into the marchers and killed Jos
e Antonio Lanchimba Guadinango from the zone of Cotacachi, Imbabura. We hold th
e national government responsable for the death of our brother, and demand a cr
iminal investigation. The car described above is known to be the type used by
state security forces.
We call upon all sectors of society to pay attention not only to the Americas C
up but also to what is happening in the country, especially in the government so
that they do not sneak in their own goal which would be deadly for family econo
mies, and for peace and justice in the country.
