Three Nobel Peace Laureates, Mariead Maguire, Adolf Esquirel
and Betty Williams, have sent an appeal to President Ibrahim
Babangida on behalf of the Ogoni People. They said, inter
alia, "We hereby appeal to you to allow the Ogoni people to
enjoy the right of self-determination in a state within the
Federal Republic of Nigeria. Please also allow them to use
their oil resources for their own development and prevail on
the oil companies operating on their land to observe high
standards of environmental care so that the women and
children of Ogoni can enjoy good health." The appeal was
dated February 15, 1993.
It is not known if President Babangida has answered the
letter.
