[ This article relayed from the Usenet "soc.culture.native" newsgroup ]

In the 25 June 1993 issue of the BIA's "Indian News" newsletter, U.S.
Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt is quoted as saying:

"The next big issue on the Native American front as we get organized and ready
to go are the sovereignty, self-governance, and government-to-government
issues. We have got to accelerate the trend toward self-governance so that we
can reshape our role from paternal guardians to active engaged partners and
separate out functions that the tribes can legitimately take over at the pace
at which they can accept them."

Reading through the government doublespeak and terrible grammar, it appears
that Babbitt is still locked into thinking that Native Americans must be
"guided" in managing their own affairs. I wonder if he knows that most
indigenous Nations predate the U.S. by a millenia or more.... <grin>
