Has anybody got any ideas about the history of ribbon shirts?

One story I heard is that they are a modern incarnation of an old trading
staandard. When nations met to trade medicene, the nations receiving the
medicene traded a shirt in respect for what was given.

Any other ideas?

Meegwetch,

Chris.
