I understand that there has recently been some discussion on this list
of the Genome Diversity Initiative (GDI), which proposes to obtain
samples of DNA from human populations all over the world. I am not on
the GDI steering committee, and have no authority to speak for it, but
I have participated in one of the GDI planning seminars. I think the
GDI is a good idea, and am dismayed to hear that the discussion of it
here has been mainly negative. If anyone would care to summarize
their objections to the project, I will not only respond but will pass
those objections on both to the GDI steering committee and to the
federal agencies that may eventually fund it.
