TOPICS:
1. Traditional (indigenous) knowledge systems for the utilization and
conservation of natural resources and biodiversity
2. The use of traditional technological practices in achieving a
sustainable utilization of resources
3. Traditional forms of social and economic organization for the management,
utilization and conservation of the environment and biodiversity
OBJECTIVES:
1. To emphasize the importance and contribution of traditional agriculture
to the development of sustainable agriculture in accordance with the
natural and social environment of different countries
2. To propitiate the exchange of experiences among researchers, practitioners
and farmers on the recovery and utilization of traditional knowledge
related to sustainable agriculture
3. To disseminate experiences and research results on new approaches for
the analysis of alternatives for agricultural development on a sustainable
basis.
GENERAL PROGRAM
The program will occupy the first four days of December, 1993. It includes
conferences, discussion panels with invited participants, and the analysis
and discussion of selected contributions from researchers and farmers
interested in the dissemination of their experiences.
REGIONAL SHOW OF LOCAL VARIETIES OF MAIZE AND BEANS
The Symposium and Conference will conclude on Saturday, December 4, with
the presentation of the VI Regional Show of Seeds of Local Varieties of
Maize and Beans. Over 400 farmers from more than 80 communities of central
Mexico are expected to participate in the event.
This show has been held at CEICADAR since 1988. Its purpose is to
propitiate the exchange of native seeds of basic crops among farmers
from several regions in central Mexico, the most important peasant
farming region of the country.
ORGANIZATION OF THE SYMPOSIUM AND CONFERENCE
1. The call for papers is open to researchers, technicians, practitioners
and farmers interested in these topics.
2. Participants are requested to send a one-page summary of their research
results or experiences, which have not been published previously. The
complete paper must be turned in at the beginning of the Symposium
(letter size and recorded on a 5.25" diskette in Word Perfect 5.1 (or
above) for DOS or Windows.
3. Each participant is limited to no more than two papers. The deadline
for receiving summaries is October 1, 1993.
4. Summaries must be accompanied by the registration fee, a money order or
bank check in the name of M.C. Francisco Escobedo Castillo.
5. The Organization Committee will notify the participant in advance the
acceptance of his/her paper.
6. Presentation time will be of 15 minutes plus an additional five minutes
for questions and discussion.
7. Participants who presented papers will receive a diploma, and their
work will be published in the Symposium Proceedings. If participants
cannot attend, they should appoint a substitute to give the paper.
