For the participation on the Conference at ECO-92 in Rio, Indians
of some nations from Brazil formed the "Comite Intertribal"
(Intertribal Comity), that during the meeting became, through their
democratic elections, the "Comite Intertribal - Memoria e Ciencia
Indigena" (Intertribal Comity-Memory and Indigenous Science), with
the objective to promote the organization, cultural valuation, and
physical survival for the Indigenous people.
The Intertribal Comity-Memory and Indigenous Science is
organizing during the days 4,5 and 6 of August 1993, the first
Conference of Indigenous people of the Ocidnetal Amazon in Central
region of Brazil, Cuiaba-Mato Grosso, with the title "A New
Alliance". The Conference is part of a ntional mobilization for the
rights of indigenous nations of Mato Grosso and rondonia and
intends to discuss subjects such as Constitutional Review,
Indigenous Status, demarcation of Land, self sustainable economy,
education, health, and also financiated projects by the World Bank
(Prodeagro e Planafloro) for the indigenous comunities in those two
states.
The conference has the participation, between others, of the
indigenous status responsible at the Deputaty Assemply (Brasilia),
Mr. Luciano Pizzato; the Judge of the First Federal Office in Mato
Grosso, Mrs. Maria Divina Vitoria, from the representatn of the
Center of Indigenous Rights from Brasilia, Mrs. Juliana Santilli,
who will orientate the Indians about the aspects of the legislation
wich are refered to in the Brazilian Constitution.
The conference aims at, fundamentally, the clarifying and the
ynion of the indigenous movement, because of the urgent nedd to
mobilization to claim and garantee their rights. At this
International Indigenous People year, the indigenous people of
Brazil run the risk to loose the rights they have already gained in
the Brazilian Constitution, because in the next month a
constitutional revision is anticipated that will affect the
articles referent to the indigenous people. The next October 5th
1993 is the dead-line for all indigenous people land demarcation
and protection in Brazil accordint to th Cosntitute are
yet many indigenous areas to be demarcated.
In May/June this year, began a national campaign forheindigenous rights.
The campaign hasaicipaionof mny
indigenous organizations and so many other instituinstht work
and give support to this issue. Some periodic meeting ha ben
organized at the FEderal Brazilian University-DF. That is the
headquarter of the campaign.
Because of the big territorial distances, a Indigenous
Articulation Comission has been created with the objectives to
organize and exchange information between e ny vla n
various region of Brazil. In Brazil tere arebou 200000Indisthat speak about 170
different languages. It has already been a
meeting in the north and northeast of Brazil, tthe pevsion o
another to be organized in the south of Brzil. Fr eachmetng
a claiming document is elaborated that will be summarized and given
to the National Congress in September with various signatures
obtained in different regions of the country as expression of the
