Serpent Mound in Danger?

[ This article relayed from the Usenet "soc.culture.native" newsgroup ]

I just got back from spending the weekend in Southern Ohio, with the main
intent of the trip being to visit the Serpent Mound. Anyway, upon our arrival
and during our time there; we found out from locals that there is a group of
developers that are thinking of buying up the land surrounding the Mound (which
includes burial sites) and "constructing" a lake; then selling lakefront prop-
erty. The surrounding land is still very sacred (where they are thinking of
putting in this lake) and the developers will "protect" the Serpent Mound and
the surrounding burial mounds by building a retaining wall. I really have no
other firm information at this time; but supposedly there was a small article
in the Washington Post a while back. I guess I have two things to say: one,
has anyone else heard anything about this; and two, I wanted to try to raise
some awareness of the situation. There is talk of a benefit concert in the
Spring (still in the formative stages) that would raise money to buy up the
land before the developers do. If anyone else has any information, could they
please send it to me? I'm trying to see what I can find out and any other info
would be extremely helpful. It sounds like the developers are trying to keep
this pretty hush-hush while they figure out the legalities of the situation; so
now would be a good time to let as many people as possible know--at this point
more people have called requesting info on the property than to protest the
desecration of sacred land! I want to find hard evidence and then spread the
word....
Peace,
