A couple of people wanted to know about the Cherokee Advocate.
The address is
Cherokee Advocate
PO box 948
Tahlequah, OK 74465
Subscribe before Sept 1 and it's $10, else it's $12.50 i think.
It's published by the Cherokee Nation (it's an official paper) and
it's monthly. They have a number at 918-456-0671 but i have no idea
what the number is. I don't think it's a subscription number.
July's issue was 32 pages. August was only 16. I'm not sure
what's a normal size.
It's mostly issues about the people of the Cherokee nation.
All of August's issue was on the National holiday (Constitution day)
Sept 6. The other issue has articles like Cherokee Nation passes
Environmental Law, Tribes to propose Legislation to Congress for
Riverbed settlement, Chief Mankiller is doing ok after surgery, etc.
It's got a pen pal section, letters to editor and a genealogy
section where people send in letters asking for help tracing
relatives (the current issue wants info for people from 1876-1926).
They talk about the elderly food distribution site (it's moved a
mile down the road), Cherokee rap artists, new buisness contracts
the nation got, lots on the HeadStart program and an honor list of
who's doing well in school (there's a whole page dedicated to 9 kids
who made the honor roll).
So it's pretty local info - no mention of wars, past
problems with whites, indian rights, discrimination or anything
like that that i can tell. Mostly just news interesting to local
people, like when school starts and a new class is being offered
by mrs so-and-so. I think it's interesting, but i don't know how
many others will.
Hope that helps. I'm going to Tahlequah Next week, so
we'll see what i can dig up then. I'll be at the dance tournament
saturday night if anyone wants to meet me there.
