I am an Associate Professor and Minority Liaison Officer at the Graduate
School of Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at
Austin. I am also an enrolled member of the Pembina Band of the Minnesota
Chippewa Tribe, enrolled at the White Earth Reservation. Your student may
contact me about possible financial aid sources at UT Austin. UT Austin
provides 20 graduate recruitment fellowships for incoming minority
students each year. Students must compete, largely on the basis of
academics (undergraduate GPA and GRE scores) for these awards; the
deadline is usually early in the Spring, around February for the first 10
awards and in April for the remaining ten awards. Graduate departments
may also have separate funding. For example, this year I received a grant
to recruit a student to specialize in library services to Native American
populations. The recipient received a HEA Title IIB fellowship of
approximately $10,800 for the academic year, Sept. 1993 - August 1994.
This is a good time to prepare to apply for awards that begin in Sept. 1994.
