Members of the Fijian Nationalist United Party are spearheading moves to
set up an indigenous rights pressure group called Tagi ni Vanua.
The name means "what the people want".
Party vice-president Isireli Vuibau said the group will lobby for
recognition of the indigenous people's rights in accordance with the
International Labour Organistion's Convention 169, which recognises the
rights of indigenous people around the world.
Mr Vaibau said Tagi ni Vanua will be concentrating on the sensitive land
and fishing grounds issues.
They will also be dealing with natural resources, customs, traditions
and folklore.
He said the party had written to the ILO and had been told to seek
affiliation which the indigenous rights movements in countries like
Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. ..ends.
