Thanks, Elizabeth, for reminding me of Stern's work on Klamath
termination...I relied heavily on him when I was an undergraduate
when I wrote about "termination"...I will rush to the library and
check it out immediately, if I remember, his study showed the
disasterous results of the policy, he also noted that the
Menominee and the Klamath tribes were especially targeted because
of their economic successes. It reminded me of the Cherokee cases
where another prosperous and "civilized" tribe was forced to
participate in a program which was economically disasterous.
Elizabeth, the tribes you mentioned as having requested ternimation
of the special trust relationship...is there anything on their cases
that you would suggest for me to look at? Have any of them
petitioned the courts or congress to reinstate tribal status?
