Jake,

Hi. I would recommend that you give Emelia Seubert or Elizabeth Weatherford
a call--they are the film curators at the Museum of the American Indian in
NYC, and they publish a *very* thorough directory called "Native Americans on
Film and Video," which includes films BY as well as about NA's. This will
provide you with a good list of filmmakers out there. Emelia could also help
you if you're interested in something more specific, and could probably give
you addresses and phone numbers for the filmmakers.

Some specific filmmakers whose works I admire are Sandra Sunrising Osawa,
Alanis Obomsawin, George Burdeau, Larry Littlebird, Bo Boudart, Victor
Masayesva, Jr, and Chris Spotted Eagle. There are many more, but these
are some to start wit.. They seems to have clear vision, and make strong
statements with their work.

I would be interested in hearing what you do with this topic. I do believe
that as new, young filmmakers widen the cultural scope of filmmaking, the
more quickly and effectively we can overcome the limited visual language
that Hollywood has provided to us, as well as the narrow view of the "world"
perpetrated by Hollywood cinema and television.

Good luck. Hope this helps you out.

Pam
