[Radio Japan/NHK-07Sep93-1100UTC] The United Nations has started
talks with the Myanmar government on the flight of hundreds of
thousands of Islamic tribes people into Bangladesh. The Islamic
tribes people, called Rohingyas, are a minority people living in
frontier areas bordering Bangladesh but the military regime of
Myanmar has recently been cracking down on them with armed forces,
saying that most of the Rohingyas are staying in Myanmar illegally.
As a result, some 300 000 are said to have fled into Bangladesh to
escape persecution.
In a bid to repatriate the Rohingya refugees the office in Geneva
of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees sent 10 delegates to
Yangon, the Myanmar capital, and opened talks with the Myanmar
government on Saturday.
