NATIVE-L: temporary hold / archive situation

Dear NATIVE-L List Members,

I regret to inform you that I have had to suspend operation of the
mailing list at least for the time being, due to the fact that the
disk space allocated for our archive has apparently become consumed.
I am hoping to get this problem resolved soon. Meanwhile, I would
ask that you hold all articles intended for NATIVE-L. The NATCHAT,
NAT-LANG, and NAT-EDU lists are not affected (NAT-1492 is now pretty
much dormant, though the archives have some very interesting articles,
which you might like to check out, by the way). There is a new list
on the health issues of indigenous peoples, moderated by Yolandra
Gomez, which has yet to become fully operational, due to technical
problems of a different nature. I'll give subscription details for
that list once the problems have been resolved. (If anyone knows
of a LISTSERV, ftp, or gopher site where we might be able to store
portions of the archive, please let me know just as soon as possible!)

During the period of article suspension, I suggest that you might
want to browse through the NATIVE-L archives. To get instructions
on retrieving articles from the archives (which is really not at
all difficult to do, once you get the hang of it), just send a
message containing *only* the text:

get nn-intro archives native-l

to the address:

listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu

(that's the letter "l" in "native-l" and the numeral "1" in "tamvm1").

For more complete instructions on how the database facility works,
send a message containing:

info database

(You can send both requests in a single message, if you like.)

You can use the same instructions to search the NAT-LANG and NAT-1492
archives at TAMVM1, as well as the NAT-EDU archives at INDYCMS (use
the address "listserv@indycms.iupui.edu" to search this "filelist"
archive).

Just to get the hang of things, you might want to request a list of
recently-posted articles. You can do so by sending the text:

// job echo=no
database search dd=rules
//rules dd *
select * in native-l since 1 september
index
/*

to the TAMVM1 LISTSERV address given above ("listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu"
or "listserv@tamvm1.bitnet" - or just "listserv@tamvm1" for BITNET
users). Articles can be selected from an index list like the one
you'll get back in response to the job shown above, or you can specify
criteria based on the text of articles; it's all explained in the two
database articles mentioned above.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

I hope to have more news for you shortly about resolving the archive
emergency.

Regards,

Gary (NativeNet founder and co-moderator)
