The Australian Leg of the Sacred Run will begin in Sydney on the
17th of September and travel via the coast to Townsville, across to
Alice Springs, Adelaide, Melbourne and complete the circle in
Sydney on the 29th of October. From Sydney the Sacred Run will
fly to Auckland to begin the New Zealand Run.
The run is expected to last 50 days, attract 80 runners and cover a
distance of more than 8000 kilometres through deserts, over
mountains, and along coastlines.
In 1977, The Elders Circle, a gathering of Native Spiritual leaders
asked that a message be taken to people of all colours - Black,
Red., Yellow and White, so that they may see that this precious
relationship between humans and Mother Earth is in danger; and
that our living resources need to be protected.
"Brothers and Sisters we must return to the prayers and
ceremonies, meditations, rituals and celebrations of thanksgiving
which link us with the spiritual powers which sustain us and by
example teach our children this respect".
Celebrating "The International Year for Indigenous Peoples" this
Sacred Run is one of thousands of events that are happening
worldwide promoting the need to maintain the delicate balance
that exists between humankind and Mother Earth.
Dennis Banks, an Anishnabe Indian, revived this traditional form
of message bringing and since the formation of the Sacred Run
more than 50 000 kilometres of land has been travelled, covering
Japan, Europe (through: England, France, Belgium, Germany,
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Finland and
Russia), Canada and the United States. A French newspaper read,
".They are not presenting themselves as lesson givers. They are
simply intent to awaken consciousness as they are making their
path."
Cultural Exchange Events will include: Native American song,
dance and drumming, traditional regalia, local mayors, musicians,
aboriginal elders, song & dance groups, community
representatives, school children. Everyone is invited to these
gatherings to show support and hear the special message that the
runners carry.
"Spirituality is the foundation of our purpose. All life is sacred.
Every living species: Human Being, bird, tree, plant, fish, and
insect is sacred. The Earth itself, is Parent to all, is Sacred." Says
Sacred Run Director and Coach, Dennis Banks (Chippewa) Sacred
Run Director & Coach, USA.
DAILY CEREMONIES
Each day begins with the burning of tobacco and cedar. Runners
carry a staff and every kilometre is filled with prayers for all
living species - every plant, tree & flower. We pray for our
relations: The four legged's, the winged ones, and the insects. We
give thanks to the great spirit for all that is given to us and pay
daily respect to the moon, the stars, the sun and to the sacredness
of women. Every evening we gather in a circle and offer tobacco in
a ceremonial way. Purification ceremonies are conducted on the
way. It is a run for our young generations, a time to respect our
elders, and to prepare the direction for the 7th generation. We
shall not be in the presence of alcohol or drugs. We will honour all
races who join in the spiritual run. We will not quarrel about
different beliefs.
Local runners are invited to join the runners as they pass through
the area. For long distances they will have to provide their own
transportation, petrol, water, food, etc. The Run will travel
between 150 & 350 kilometres per day by way of relay "Crow
Hopping", meeting communities and local folk along the way,
exchanging stories, poetry, dance, music, prayers and medicine.
Co-ordinators are presently seeking assistance and sponsorship
